Flow Observation Project for a Water Utilities Company
AB Surveying and Development also offers Flow Observation to its clients by using Mainstream AV Flowmeter. The instrument is capable of data gathering at either open (ex. culverts, creeks) or closed (ex. box or round pipes) channels. The instrument is also capable of observing the flow in the channels even if the flow is only partial.
This instrument is capable of measuring the flow velocity, which is the speed of the flow, by immersing the flowmeter in the liquid. The instrument has a probe that emits ultrasound into the liquid. Bubbles and solid particles then reflects back the ultrasound to the probe which is being used by the instrument to measure the speed of the flow. It is also capable of measuring the cross-sectional area of the flow at different times by installing the description of the channel and checking the level, or height, of the flow using a pressure transmitter or ultrasonic sensor. Lastly, it collects the flow rate, which is the volume of flow in the channel at a certain time, by multiplying the flow velocity to the cross-sectional area of the flow.

Aerial LiDAR Mapping of a Mining Site in Isabela
An exploration area located at Dinapigue, Isabela with an area of 2,570 hectares was surveyed via Aerial LiDAR Scanning, using the RIEGL VUX 1-LR Laser Scanner mounted on a helicopter. It took only six (6) hours to scan the area and acquire millions of points and thousands of photographs, in order to obtain a detailed point cloud and orthophoto. These data were then post-processed to achieve an accurate and reliable terrain maps, tied to established ground control points that are in network with nearby NAMRIA benchmarks and control points.
From the three-dimensional point cloud data, several maps were derived such as the digital terrain model (DTM), digital surface model (DSM), contour, and waterways. The footprint of roads, pathways and structures were also traced from the point cloud to digitize an as-built map. The as-built map was then incorporated with the contours and waterways to come up with a topographic map. These maps shall serve as the basemaps for the project area.

Aerial LiDAR Mapping and Hydrographic Survey in Zambales
Project Brief
The developing municipality of Sta Cruz, Zambales, under constant pressure of a growing population, urbanization and industrialization, addressed the emergent need for proper town planning. Using the combination of LiDAR mapping, the most advanced technique in surveying, and hydrographic surveying, a reliable information system, both on the land and waters of Poblacion South and Poblacion North, Sta. Cruz, was obtained.
Using the LiDAR and hydrographic data, various maps such as contour map, digital surface and terrain models, as-built map, orthophoto map, and digital 3D model are created. These maps can essentially be used for many applications, such as military operations, disaster management, mapping of man-made structures and natural resources, 3D city modelling, tax mapping, simulation of new buildings, updating and keeping cadastral data, change detection and virtual reality. This project enabled the municipality of Sta. Cruz to plan and manage the development of the locality for the benefit of its constituents, while safeguarding and enhancing the quality of its natural environment.

Aerial LiDAR Mapping in El Nido, Palawan
Nacpan Beach, covering a total area of 1.5 hectares, and Lalutaya Island, 33.5 hectares, were mapped using aerial LiDAR scanning. The aerial survey was conducted to acquire the characteristic and features of the area for planning and development purposes. With the LiDAR capability to penetrate vegetation and generate ground measurements, highly detailed digital terrain models (DTM) of the properties were obtained using the point cloud data gathered by the scanner.
The outputs from the data acquisition includes aerial photos which were geometrically corrected and georeferenced to obtain the orthophotos of the islands. The pixel colors from these orthophotos were then merged with the LiDAR point cloud, attributing each color to its respective co-coordinate point, to assemble a colorized 3D representation of the properties. Other outputs generated were the digital surface models (DSM) and topographic maps.

3D As-Built Scanning of the Monument of Outstanding Recollects
In 1994, the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR) founded the Bulwagang Recoletos or Hall of the Recollects, in the Recoletos Formation Center compound in the Mira Nila Homes at Tandang Sora, Quezon City. Just outside the Bulwagang Recoletos, this “Monument of Outstanding Recollects” can be viewed. It was sculpted by Florante Caedo in 1993. The monument features six heroes of the Augustinian Recollects, who have devoted great effort to evangelize and build Christian communities in the Philippines. Also, housed in this compound are the repository of all the manuscripts and artifacts that the OAR has accumulated throughout the centuries.
To showcase the capability of the as-built laser scanner, particularly the FARO Focus3D X330, this monument was scanned, given the permission from the administrators of the Hall of the Recollects. In-detail scan of the monument was achieved, as seen from the images above. These images are screen grabbed from the GIS software displaying the “point cloud” data collected via scanning. This level of accuracy obtained by the FARO laser scanner has also manifested with other structural survey projects conducted by the AB Surveying and Development.

3D As-Built Scanning of a Fluid Collection and Recycling System Facility
The requirement of this project is to achieve a 3D as-built map of the FCRS facility of the power plant, covering an area of 76.80 hectares. With the modernization efforts of the client, they are in need of reference maps to create a retrofit design and monitor the pipe systems. In line with their goal to acquire relevant and accurate representation of their most vital assets, it is necessary to produce engineering grade, millimeter-level 3D structural maps.
It is then deemed appropriate to use the FARO Focus 3D X 330, a high definition laser scanner used for structural and industrial as-built surveys. Existing pipelines, pipe supports, vessels, and other facilities such as valves, separators, silencer, thermal ponds, sumps, etc. were precisely measured including their vertical and horizontal coordinates. The LiDAR point cloud composing billions of points representing the features portrays a realistic three dimensional terrain model of the facility. This model is later enhanced to create a 3D structural model by tracing the surfaces and features from the point cloud.

LiDAR Mapping of the City of Baguio
As the country’s leader in LiDAR surveying, AB Surveying and Development completes the first ever citywide LiDAR mapping to arrive with survey-grade maps, including an aerial photo, digital surface model and digital terrain model (DSM-DTM), topographic and waterways map and as-built maps of structures, houses, roads, drainage system and surface utilities, suitable for engineering applications.
Baguio City, 5,750 hectares in area, is a highland retreat in the Grand Cordillera of Northern Luzon and is characterized as a highly urbanized mountainous area. If it were to be surveyed using conventional methods, it could have taken several years to gather that voluminous data on land. Through the advancement of technology, this timeframe has been reduced to a record time that seemed unimaginable a few years ago. Baguio City’s aerial LiDAR survey was conducted by mounting a LiDAR equipment from a helicopter and gathering data by grazing and sweeping Baguio City line after line during a flight scan that lasted for a total of only eight (8) hours.
The Government of Baguio City, in their initiative to sustain projects for city-wide infrastructure planning, road network management, flood mapping, tax mapping and disaster risk management, shares this feat with ABSD in a press conference held last November 27, 2018 at the City Multipurpose Hall.

Architectural Documentation of San Nicolas De Tolentino Church
First constructed in 1584 and rebuilt in 1693, San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish Church is a beautifully preserved Roman Catholic church located in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte. As one of the oldest buildings in the province, the Augustinian church is one of the treasured cultural heritage sites of the Ilocanos.
Given its historical significance, San Nicolas Church has undergone an architectural documentation as part of the parish’s preservation efforts with the aid of AB Surveying & Development. A detailed 3D laser as-built scanning of the baroque façade, interior and exterior features (including the three-storey bell tower) was made using FARO Focus 3D X330. In just a few hours of fieldwork, AB Surveying and Development was able to capture intricate details of the structure as point cloud data. 3D images were then made using a computer-aided design (CAD) software and fully displayed every feature, including cracks that the structure may have suffered over centuries of service. The generated data could now be used as basis for future renovations to maintain the original architectural design of the church.
In a country like the Philippines where centuries-old Catholic churches are considered significant pieces of culture, heritage, and tradition, preservation efforts are constantly needed. Technological advancements like the detailed 3D laser scanning are important tools that ensure the preservation and survival of these structures for generations to come.

Aerial LiDAR Survey of Proposed Light Rail Transit Expansion
Project Brief
Trains have always been a big help in easing the daily commute of the general public. It also helps in mitigating the heavy traffic that is evident in the cities of Metro Manila by giving an alternative choice for public transportation to the commuters. In the long run, it is the goal to make trains the main mode of mass public transportation and that is why the government keeps on improving and expanding train stations and routes in order to accommodate a larger population.
Through the use of Aerial LiDAR Scanning (using Riegl VUX 1-LR), ABSD has the possibility to survey the proposed route alignments in a faster manner without compromising the accuracy of the survey. The data gathered from the scanning is then used to make as-built maps and later on used for parcellary surveying to check for any encroachments on the alignment.
